Tasmania’s councils are the permit authorities, CBOS licenses the trades, and the Building Act 2016 makes the permit-and-certificate chain explicit. Smaller market, fewer certifiers — book early.
The licensing body for Tasmania is Consumer, Building and Occupational Services (CBOS).
Building work requires a licensed builder (or owner-builder); plumbing, electrical and gas are separately licensed trades. CBOS administers all of them.
Permit pathway — the order matters, because a permit issued before the use is approved is wasted money.
AS 1428.1 access is assessed at permit stage; accessible entry and WC are the common gaps in older Tasmanian stock.
Register with your local council under the Food Act 2003; inspection happens before registration.
CBOS Liquor and Gaming — a liquor licence plus planning permission for the use.
Council planning approval; heritage-listed Hobart and Launceston streetscapes are tightly controlled.
Tasmania Fire Service requirements and a fire safety schedule; maintenance records are audited.
Plumbing work by a licensed plumber; trade waste consent from TasWater.
Buildings before 2004 require an asbestos register for workplaces; removal licensed.
